Is Carpentry (Construction) a Good Career for Women?

Now is the time for women to consider choosing a career in construction, in-particular carpentry! Industry organizations like the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) say there is a shortage of skilled and qualified workers.

“In 2023, the industry will need to bring in nearly 590,000 new workers on top of normal hiring to meet industry demand, and that’s presuming that construction spending growth slows next year,” ABC announced in a statement last year.

Is Carpentry (Construction) a Good Career for Women?

Women in Construction

In the construction industry as a whole women make up only 11.0% of the workforce, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. However, the data shows more women are entering the industry in roles like office and administrative staff, followed by management and skilled trades.

All that to say, there are plenty of different career opportunities in construction for women, but carpentry is especially an ideal choice!

Benefits of Choosing a Career in Carpentry

Competitive wages and benefits: Due to the high demand for this trade, skilled carpenters can earn a nice living!

Career Advancement: From entry level to supervisor roles, the need for carpenters is expected to grow with demand for new home construction, factories and other nonresidential buildings, according the the Bureau of Labor Statistics. They add openings will also result from a need to replace retiring workers and others who change occupations.

Personal Fulfillment: Many construction industry professionals cite the rewarding feeling that comes with building something in the community where they live, work and play. Few things compare with the sense of accomplishment at seeing what you’ve built.
